Flashback 38 years ago in 1974, the same Malaysian King, Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah welcoming Queen Elizabeth II during Her Majesty's historic visit to Malaysia.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Malaysia in 1974, or 38 years ago to this day, 14th September 2012

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife Catherine were treated to a closed welcoming reception hosted by the Sabah state government at a 5 star resort in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia, this evening, Friday 14th September 2012.

The historic visit by the British royal couple, truly mesmerised Sabah, once known as British North Borneo, during the collonial rule before gaining independence on 16th September 1963l.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived the resort in Tanjung Aru, near Kota Kinabalu, at 8.20pm and spent a little over half an hour at the reception before adjourning to their suite.

Prince William, who wore a black suit, and Catherine, dressed in a white lace outfit over a blue knee-length dress designed by British fashion designer Alice Temperly, were presented beaded jewelry known as Pinakol, which is synonymous with the Rungus ethnic culture, as a welcoming gesture.

Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, Sabah deputy chief ministers Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and Datuk Yahya Hussin as well as state and foreign dignitaries.

Tomorrow, Prince William and Catherine will fly via helicopter to Danum Valley, a primary rainforestáconservation area located 70km from Lahad Datu, where they will spend the day briefed by researchers and explore the 438 sq km area.

Malaysia is the royal couple's second destination after Singapore, en route a nine-day tour of the Far East, as representatives to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in conjunction with the celebration to mark the 60-year reign of the Queen.

The Queen herself visited Sabah in the 1960s and named the biggest hospital in Sabah as Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the name remains till now.

Tanjung Aru beach was also named Prince Philip, the Queen's husband.

While another hospital in Sandakan was named Duchess of Kent Hospital and the name remains till now.
