SUNGAI PETANI, KEDAH, MALAYSIA : The family who held a wedding feast in Kampung Huma, Tanjung Dawai, which ended in four deaths and 270 sick guests due to food poisoning, is appealing to the public not to look at them askance.

The bride's mother, Fazliyaton Nawawi, 46, said she dared not go out after the tragic incident even though her neighbours did not appear to blame them.

However, many people were blaming the family on social media sites such as Face book, despite her eldest daughter and third son being affected as well and warded at the Yan Hospital.

"My humble apologies to all our guests. Those who died were also our friends and relatives. Those who came to the feast have not blamed us, so please stop the comments on Face book," she said when met at her home here on Thursday, 3rd October 2013.

The bride's father Yusof Ahmad, 52, said their only intention was to celebrate the wedding of their second child, Hasliyana, 22, to Mohd Fauzan Zakaria, 26.

"We never thought it would come to this. It was a celebration but some even said we poisoned the food," he said.

Meanwhile, more of the victims have been discharged, leaving nine at the Yan Hospital and 10 at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here.

Kedah Education, Transportation and Public Works Committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said the remaining victims were getting better and expected to be discharged soon.

He said they included a 58-year-old male patient who had been transferred from the intensive care unit to a normal ward at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.

"What had happened is a tragedy. Even eating stale rice is not fatal," he told reporters after visiting the victims at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here.

Four people died of food poisoning and about 270 others had to seek treatment at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital and other hospitals in Yan, Baling and Sik after attending a wedding banquet in Kampung Huma, Tanjung Dawai near here on Saturday.

The victims complained of stomach-aches and nausea after eating the food served. - Bernama
