Air Asia X to launch first flight to Christchurch, New Zealand on 1st April 2011

Well this is not April's Fool.

But on 1st April, 2011 Malaysia's long haul, low fare AirAsia X will launch its first flight into Christchurch, New Zealand, with non-stop services, four times a week from Kuala Lumpur.

Christchurch is the tourism gateway to New Zealand’s South Island and beyond including Antartica, for travelers from Kuala Lumpur and provides them with an option to travel on the famous Kangaroo route between Europe, Malaysia and New Zealand/Australia.

And to get a taste of Antartica, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X, Azran Osman-Rani himself recently came back from an amazing venture in the South Pole which is the coldest place in the world!!!

In Antartica, he had the opportunity to visit the American and New Zealand research bases at McMurdo and Scott Base to experience the unique climate and geology of the coldest, driest and windiest continent and learn about the fascinating research projects being undertaken there.

Azran flew to Antarctica on a five-hour flight from the United States Antarctic Program Passenger Terminal in Christchurch, New Zealand and landed at the Pegasus Runway, an airstrip on an ice shelf at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica; where he stayed for two days at the Scott Base facility together with the scientists and field support services teams.

Antarctica New Zealand has also hosted Malaysian scientists conducting research on the Ice.

“We are willing to go to the ends of Earth in search of adventure-that is our X-Factor at AirAsia X,” said Azran Osman-Rani.

“This trip captures the essence of our pioneering X-ploratory spirit of pushing boundaries and breaking conventions. There is no place that is too cold or too remote to stop us from championing low fares and exciting travels and adventures. We are optimistic about our first flight into Christchurch, New Zealand in April as Christchurch is not only a beautiful place to travel but close to many adventurous destinations such as the fiords, glaciers and mountains of the South Island where there are many thrilling activities to experience. We are pleased with our encouraging 80% passenger loads since we announced open for sale in December 2010, and believe the demand will indeed increase once we start operations,” he added.


Besides touring the research base and facilities, including the Meridian Energy Wind Turbine farm, Azran, who is an outdoor adrenaline-junkie, grabbed at the opportunity to go along several hikes across the terrain, climbed several hills including the famed Castle Rock and Observatory Hill, as well as taking part in cross-country Nordic skiing across the ice-in below freezing temperatures that ranged from -10 to -35 degrees Celsius in the Southern Summer. His adventure in Antarctica also gave him the opportunity to come close to see the native Antarctic residents-Emperor penguins and Weddel seals, although he was careful to stay at least 5 metres away from the wildlife, as required under the Antarctic conservation rules.

Shisha smoking is banned in Kota Bahru, Kelantan, Malaysia

To Shisha smokers out there... It is bad news if you plan to smoke Sisha in one part of Malaysia.

Or Kota Bahru, the capital of Kelantan, an East Coast state in Malaysia.

Media reported today 22nd February 2011 that the Kota Baru Municipal Council has banned all food outlets there from allowing shisha smoking at their premises with immediate effect.

Its secretary Mohd Anis Hussein said this was provided for under local licensing by-laws.

"Enforcement action will be taken against outlets not heeding the ban," he told Bernama, the Malaysian national news agency.

Meanwhile, Kelantan mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad said the state fatwa council was awaiting a ruling on the matter from the National Fatwa Council so that there could be uniformity in all states.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced in 2007 that a single session of smoking shisha yielded a nicotine intake equivalent to more than one pack of cigarettes.

It said shisha smoke retained all the carcinogens of cigarette smoke while adding more carbon monoxide and a separate set of carcinogens from the use of burning coals to keep the nicotine flowing, coupled with the risk of infection with tuberculosis or hepatitis from shared mouthpieces.

Meanwhile Middle East experts said smoking Shisha is 200 times worse than smoking a cigarette.

And a typical hour long shisha session involves inhaling 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled when smoking a cigarette and there is no proof that any adaptation can make waterpipes safer.

So... stop smoking Sisha and cigarettes because both are bad for your health... !!!

Gutsy lady, single handedly counter-attacked 2 robbers

In KUALA LUMPUR, media reported on 22nd February 2011 that a gutsy and very tough lady, single handedly pursued after 2 robbers and taught them a lesson.

She delivered the message - DON'T MESS WITH ME" in true fashion.

In the end, it was a gory end for one snatch thief who died with his private parts severed in a collision at Ampang Jaya, near Kuala Lumpur.

The police and passers-by found the body of the 35-year-old suspect in a drain, with his penis almost crushed and detached from his body. His pants had been ripped from his body in the accident.

His accomplice, who was riding pillion, suffered body injuries.

The incident happened soon after the 28-year-old victim who is a super-woman of sorts, was locking the gate to leave her home in Taman Mega Jaya in Ampang at around 8.30am yesterday Monday 21st February 2011.

She had left the bag in her Toyota Vios, while the car engine was on.

A man suddenly appeared, opened the car door and snatched the bag. The woman tried to fight back but was kicked in the abdomen.

Ampang Jaya Polic Chief Assistant Commissioner Amirruddin Jamaluddin said the woman then got into her car and gave chase before blocking them.

The two men were caught off-guard and rammed right into the victim’s car resulting in both of them being flung from the machine. The accident occurred about 200m from the woman’s house.

The snatch theft victim was not hurt in the incident.

ACP Amiruddin also said both men had valid driving licences but the motorcycle they were using was reported stolen.

Police are investigating if the suspects were involved in other criminal activities in the district.

Reporter's on-air gibberish was due to migraine, not stroke

Sometimes, this things happens when you are Live On Air, On TV.

In Los Angeles, California, USA, a TV reporter who lapsed into gibberish during a live shot outside the Grammys said she was terrified when it happened and knew something was wrong as soon as she opened her mouth.

KCBS-TV reporter Serene Branson's incoherence Sunday, 13th February 2011 fueled Internet speculation that she suffered an on-air stroke. But doctors at the University of California, Los Angeles where she went to get a brain scan and blood work done ruled it out.

Doctors said she suffered a type of migraine that can mimic symptoms of a stroke.

Branson told the station in an interview Thursday that she "started to get a really bad headache" but assumed she was just tired.

"At around 10 o'clock that night I was sitting in the live truck with my field producer and the photographer and I was starting to look at some of my notes," she said. "I started to think, the words on the page are blurry and I could notice that my thoughts were not forming the way they normally do."

"As soon as I opened my mouth I knew something was wrong," Branson said. "I was having trouble remembering the word for Grammy," she said. "I knew what I wanted to say but I didn't have the words to say it."

The station quickly cut away, and she was examined by paramedics and recovered at home.

Most people with migraines don't have any warning. But about 20 to 30 percent experience sensations before or during a migraine attack."A migraine is not just a headache. It's a complicated brain event," said UCLA neurologist Dr. Andrew Charles, who examined Branson.

The most common sensations include seeing flashes of light or zigzag patterns. In Branson's case, she felt numbness on the right side of her face that affected her speech, Charles said.

"She was actually having the headache while she was having these other symptoms," he said.

Branson told doctors she's had migraines since a child, but never suffered an episode like this before, Charles said.

Well Lara Logan was reporting from Tahrir Square on the day when President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, when she was attacked by lawless and foolish Egyptians who have no respect for ladies and the laws.

Now, Senior CBS correspondent Lara Logan is recovering in hospital in the United States after she was beaten and sexually assaulted by a mob while covering the Egyptian protests, the US network says.

It says the attack occurred on Friday 18 February, 2011 in Cairo's packed Tahrir Square after President Hosni Mubarak stepped down.

Ms Logan became separated from her crew and was rescued by women and soldiers.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has said 52 journalists were assaulted and 76 detained during events in Egypt.

The New York-based group said all of them had since been released.

'Courageous reporter'

In a statement, CBS said that Ms Logan and her team became "surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration" with a mob of more than 200 people "whipped into a frenzy".

It said Ms Logan was recovering following what it described as "a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating".

A group of women and an estimated 20 soldiers managed to save her after she became separated from her colleagues and security, it added.

The 39-year-old South African returned to the United States on Saturday, 19 Feb 2011, according to newsreports.

Ms Logan is CBS News' chief foreign affairs correspondent and has reported from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said the attack was "alarming", describing Ms Logan as a "brilliant, courageous, and committed reporter".

In its annual report issued on Tuesday, the CPJ said Pakistan was the deadliest country for journalists in 2010, with 8 killed while doing their job, out of 44 worldwide.

The number of jailed reporters was 145, an increase from previous years.

S.K Ulu Lubai, Limbang, Sarawak - Permata dalam Belantara

17 Februari 2011 menjadi detik bersejarah bagi sebuah sekolah pedalaman di Limbang, Sarawak apabila dikunjungi pemimpin nombor dua negara - Timbalan Perdana Menteri merangkap menteri Pelajaran, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Mengapa Timbalan Perdana Menteri melawat sekolah berkenaan iaitu Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Lubai, nun jauh di Limbang, Sarawak??

Sekali imbas, SK Ulu Lubai hanyalah sebuah sekolah yang serba sederhana dari segi infrastruktur dengan bangunan kayu lama manakala satu-satunya binaan konkrit hanyalah tandas kegunaan murid dan guru.

Lokasinya terletak di tengah-tengah hutan belantara. Ia dihubungkan melalui jalan balak ataupun menggunakan bot panjang menyusuri Sungai Lubai yang membabitkan tempoh perjalanan kira-kira sejam daripada Medamit.

Sekolah yang dibuka pada 1964 dan pernah ditutup pada 1976 sebelum dibuka semula setahun selepas itu hanya mempunyai 30 orang murid yang dibimbing oleh 11 orang guru dengan bantuan seorang staf sokongan.

Namun hari ini, SK Ulu Lubai mencatatkan sejarah gemilang apabila muncul sebagai sekolah pedalaman pertama yang diiktiraf sebagai Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi (SBT) sekali gus memberi tamparan kepada sekolah lain yang berada di kawasan bandar mahupun luar bandar.

Menyifatkannya sebagai amat luar biasa, Muhyiddin yang juga Menteri Pelajaran berkata, kejayaan SK Ulu Lubai itu membuktikan bahawa semua sekolah mampu cemerlang tanpa mengira lokasinya.

"Kalau kita lihat persekitaran dan infrastruktur, ia amat sederhana, bangunannya sudah lama dan diperbuat daripada kayu, tidaklah seelok bangunan-bangunan konkrit di sesetengah sekolah.

"Tetapi kerana kepimpinan sekolah itu adalah cemerlang dan guru-guru serta ibu bapa bersama murid-murid amat komited untuk bantu membangunkan sekolah ini, berlaku lonjakan yang amat besar," katanya pada sidang akhbar selepas mengumumkan senarai 23 SBT Kohort Dua di SK Ulu Lubai di sini hari ini.

Muhyiddin juga melontarkan cabaran kepada sekolah-sekolah lain dengan berkata:

"Jika SK Ulu Lubai yang begini keadaannya boleh muncul yang terbaik, saya tidak fikir sekolah lain tidak mampu."

Terdahulu ketika berucap pada majlis berkenaan, Muhyiddin berkata, SK Ulu Lubai telah menunjukkan pencapaian akademik yang amat cemerlang dalam Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) dengan keputusan 100 peratus lulus sejak 2006 sehingga sekarang, menjadikannya sebagai sekolah terbaik di negeri ini.

Katanya, dalam penarafan sekolah kebangsaan, SK Ulu Lubai menduduki tempat ke-54 pada 2009 dan ia melonjak ke tempat pertama pada 2010.

Beliau memberitahu, lebih membanggakan, sekolah itu memenangi dua anugerah peringkat antarabangsa iaitu johan Commonwealth Education Good Practice Award 2009 dan finalis anugerah yang sama daripada Sekretariat Komanwel dan Kerajaan Malaysia.

Menurutnya, pencapaian terkini ialah pencalonan UNESCO Educational International Best Practices 2010.

"Di samping itu, ia juga berjaya merangkul lima anugerah peringkat kebangsaan, 14 di peringkat negeri dan 46 di peringkat bahagian dan daerah," katanya.

Dalam pada itu, Muhyiddin begitu teruja dengan inisiatif SK Ulu Lubai yang bergerak aktif dalam mewujudkan program jalinan dan jaringan dengan institusi pendidikan luar negara.

Katanya, jaringan itu bukan calang-calang kerana pada 2009 dan 2010, mereka mewujudkan jaringan dengan University Bristol, United Kingdom (UK), Jin Shan Primary School, Singapura dan Kingsford Community School serta Deptford Green School, masing-masing di UK.

Sementara itu, Guru Besar SK Ulu Lubai sejak 1998, Jaul Bunyau berkata, kunci kepada kejayaan sekolah itu ialah kerjasama daripada ibu-bapa kerana merekalah yang paling dekat dengan sekolah berkenaan,

Katanya, mengharapkan orang luar untuk membantu sekolah di pedalaman seperti SK Ulu Lubai amat sukar kerana keadaannya terpencil manakala prasarananya amat terhad.

"Jadi kita kena libatkan komuniti setempat dan guru-guru pula tidak boleh terpisah dengan masyarakat," katanya.

Sementara itu, Muhyiddin turut meluang masa melawat Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tutoh Apoh di Long Panai, Baram yang 12 hingga 18 kali ditenggelami banjir dalam masa setahun kerana terletak bersebelahan Sungai Apoh.

Sekolah berkenaan pada awal tahun lalu pernah mendapat perhatian beliau yang kemudian mengumumkan peruntukan RM50 juta untuk pembinaan bangunan baru di tempat lebih tinggi.

Muhyiddin sewaktu berucap dalam majlis bersama penghuni rumah Panjang Uma Beluvuh bersebelahan SMK Tutoh Apoh menjelaskan bangunan baru sekolah itu akan dibina dalam masa terdekat dan ia dijangka mengambil masa kira-kira dua tahun untuk disiapkan.

Beliau menjelaskan, nilai sebenar projek yang kini berada dalam peringkat melantik perunding reka bentuk itu hanyalah RM30 juta.

"Kita juga sudah membayar ganti rugi pengambilan balik tanah membabitkan keluasan 12 hektar," katanya.

Dalam pada itu, beliau turut mengumumkan peruntukan RM2,000 bagi setiap 117 pintu Rumah Panjang Uma Beluvoh bagi tujuan penyelenggaraan kediaman.

2,688 kes Denggi dilaporkan di Malaysia sehingga 10 Februari 2011

Timbalan Menteri Kesihatan merangkap Ahli Parlimen Papar, Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin dan ADUN Kawang, Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan bersama pemimpin tempatan memegang banner kempen Jom Ganyang Aedes di Kampung Besar dan Kampung Sekayan, Papar pada Februari 2011.

Sebanyak 2,688 kes Denggi dilaporkan di seluruh negara dengan enam (6) kematian sehingga 10 Februari lalu.

Ini satu penurunan berbanding 5,848 kes dengan 20 kematian dilaporkan dalam tempoh
sama tahun lepas (2010) kata Timbalan Menteri Kesihatan Malaysia,
Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

Beliau memberitahu pada tahun lepas (2010) sejumlah 46,171 kes denggi
telah dilaporkan dengan 134 kematian.

Tambahnya walaupun terdapat penurunan dari segi jumlah kes dan angka
kematian ini tidak bermakna kerajaan, kementerian kesihatan dan rakyat, perlu merasa selesa dan mengenepikan soal kesihatan persekitaran.

Beliau berkata demikian semasa berucap merasmikan Program Gotong
Royong Perdana dengan tema 'Jom Ganyang Aedes di Kampung Pengalat
Besar dan Kampung Sekayang, Papar dekat Kota Kinabalu baru baru ini.

Tegas Rosnah kerajaan telah mengambil pelbagai langkah untuk
menghapuskan nyamuk aedes dan mengurangkan insiden jangkitan demam
denggi dengan meningkatkan pengetahuan serta menterjemahkan kesedaran
tentang bahaya demam denggi kepada pelaksanaan aktiviti pencegahan
seperti gotong royong secara berterusan.

Beliau seterusnya penglibatan masyarakat amat penting dalam Program
COMBI- iaitu program komunikasi untuk perubahan tingkah laku, hampir
1,000 combi telah ditubuhkan diseluruh negara.

“Usaha termasuk aktiviti melepaskan nyamuk jantan aedes 'ajepti' untuk
mengurangkan insiden nyamuk aedes dan pada ketika ini sudah dilepaskan
di Bentong, Pahang.

Rosnah berkata Kerajaan melalui Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia juga
telah melaksanakan aktriviti 'fogging' dan mengenakan kompoun-kompoun
terhadap premis-premis yang gagal mematuhi garis panduan kebersihan
yang telah ditetapkan.

Jelasnya pada tahun lepas Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia telah
mempelbagaikan usaha untuk membenteras nyamuk aedes dan mengurangkan
insiden demam denggi.

Katanya selain membelanjakan jumlah kewangan yang tinggi ke atas
pengiklanan dan publisiti di dalam usaha membenteras denggi, usaha
ini termasuklah melantik personaliti terkenal, Aznil Nawawi dan
menteri juga telah menjadikan usaha membenteras denggi sebagai salah
satu KPI beliau.
