This is the history of the men 100 metres world record since the era of Jesse Owens in 1936. Note that the last 5 world records were set by two Jamaicans (Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt).

Jesse Owens (USA) : 10.2 seconds , June 20 1936 - Berlin Olympics Games

Carl Lewis (USA) : 9.92, Sept 24 1988. Seoul Olympics Games. Lewis set the record despite finishing second to Ben Johnson of Canada. This is because Ben Johnson who won the race with a then world record time of 9.79 seconds in the 100 metres of the 1988 Olympic final had his medal revoked for illegal usage of steroid substances.

Donovan Bailey (CANADA) : 9.84 seconds, July 27 1996

Maurice Green (USA) : 9.79 seconds, June 16 1999

Asafa Powell (JAMAICA) : 9.77 seconds, June 14 2005

Asafa Powell (JAMAICA) : 9.74 seconds, Sept 9 2007

Usain Bolt (JAMAICA) : 9.72 seconds, May 31 2008

Usain Bolt (JAMAICA) : 9.69 seconds, 16 Aug 2008 - Beijing Olympics Games 2008

Usain Bolt (JAMAICA) : 9.58 seconds, 16 Aug 2009 - Berlin World Athletics Championship 2009

After this what next? 9.55 seconds? 9.50 seconds ? 9.49 seconds? Only USAIN BOLT knows!!!!
