Sir Richard Branson, Chairman & Founder of Virgin Group, spills drink on Air Asia Boss, Tony Fernandes, while serving as Air Asia's flight attendant!!! 12 May 2013

SEPANG,SELANGOR, MALAYSIA 12 May 2013- A sultry, lipstick-wearing Sir Richard Branson finally earned his stripes as AirAsia’s flight attendant today, when he honoured his friendly wager on board AirAsia X’s D7 237 from Perth to Kuala Lumpur.

The Virgin Group founder and chairman shaved his legs, slipped into a sexy red skirt and took to the skies on Sunday, 12th May 2013, as a female flight attendant on a special AirAsia X charity flight which departed Perth, Australia.

The flamboyant entrepreneur spent the five and half hour journey pouring coffee or tea, serving meals, distributing goodies, entertaining and making in-flight announcements for the lucky guests and international media on the flight which helped to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

The event came more than two years after losing a bet to AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes.

Sir Richard and Mr Fernandes had wagered on which one of their Formula One racing teams would finish ahead of each other in their debut season of the 2010 Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, and that the loser would serve as a female flight attendant on board the winner's airline.

Mr Fernandes' team finished two spots above Sir Richard’s team in the final rankings.

“He is an entrepreneur, visionary, knight and adventurer, Sir Richard can now also add AirAsia flight attendant to his long list of credentials,” Mr Fernandes said.

“Sir Richard graduated as a member of the AirAsia cabin crew with flying colours and he performed all his in-flight duties with his usual good-humour and enthusiasm. Sir Richard is truly a great sport and AirAsia is pleased to be able to contribute to those in need through this charity flight.”

Sir Richard Branson said, “This has been a real first for me but I have enjoyed the experience and I have nothing but respect for what our fabulous flight attendants do every day to keep us safe.”

“I am also grateful to have had Tony, whom I lost the bet to, willingly help me out on the flight. I trust we kept the passengers well fed and amused. It was a lot of fun.”

“I’ve always said I’m a man of my word and I’m happy to have finally honoured the bet and contributed to a great charity along the way.”

AirAsia X will be contributing AUD$100 from each seat sold to the Starlight Children’s Foundation in Australia.

The airline will also donate 10% of all inflight sales including duty free merchandise sold on board the flight to the foundation. AirAsia BIG loyalty program will also play a part by running a “Tweet2Donate BIG” social media campaign with the aim to garner 1 million BIG points from its members, equivalent to MYR10,000 (AUD3200*) to be channelled to the charity foundation.

AirAsia X estimates to raise over AUD200, 000 from the activities carried out during the cocktail and in-flight services.

The Starlight Children Foundation was established in Australia 1988 and this year celebrating its 25th year, Starlight is dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, around the country.

In preparation for his new role, Sir Richard had his legs publicly shaved during a cocktail event in Perth on Saturday, 11th May 2013 which was attended by members of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, travel industry representatives and community including business leaders, and members of the media. Other activities were also carried out throughout the evening to further raise funds for the foundation.

The fanfare ended at the Low Cost Carrier terminal in Kuala Lumpur where a brief graduation ceremony took place for Branson. Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia had the honour of handing over the AirAsia cabin crew graduation certificate along with the AirAsia crew uniform and shoes to Sir Richard as part of the airlines gratitude to him for being a good sport.

Tony Fernandes awarded ‘Best CEO for Malaysia’ at the 2nd Asian Excellence Recognition Awards !

SEPANG, 4 April 2012 – AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes was honoured with the ‘Best CEO for Malaysia’ award—for two years in a row--at the recent 2nd Asian Excellence Recognition Awards by Corporate Governance Asia, held in Hong Kong.

The award recognizes his achievement in being a revolutionary force in the aviation industry. He is often acknowledged for his influential actions for directly shaping the way the aviation industry has evolved.

Under Fernandes’ leadership, AirAsia has grown into a world-class and innovative brand with its revolutionary low fares, premium products and high quality services.

Besides Fernandes’ personal award, AirAsia also bagged two other awards at the ceremony. AirAsia was named---for two years in succession—as the winner for ‘Best Investor Relations Company for Malaysia’ and ‘Best Investor Relations Officer for Malaysia’.

AirAsia Manager of Investor Relations, Benyamin Ismail represented the airline in receiving the awards. Benyamin Ismail himself was awarded the ‘Best Investor Relations Officer for Malaysia’, a second for him since the award was introduced.

AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said, “It’s truly an honour for us to be recognized, for two consecutive years, as the Malaysia’s finest at the awards. 2012 is indeed a great year for us, with multiple awards in the bag and most significantly, the launch of AirAsia Philippines’ maiden flights recently to Davao and Kalibo. We are also looking forward to the launch of our operations of AirAsia Japan which will be our first step into the lucrative North Asia market, in line with our vision to expand throughout greater Asia.

“In just 10 years, AirAsia soared as a leader in the aviation industry with various outstanding efforts which buttresses our position as a major player in the aviation industry, with the largest fleet in the region and of course, with an impressive market capitalization of RM9.42 billion. Our affiliates in Indonesia and Thailand have also posted strong financial performances, as they gear up for their respective IPOs this year. We look forward to more positive progress this year for AirAsia as a group, to keep us relevant and attractive to investors.”

The Asian Excellence Recognition Awards recognizes excellence in investor communications, business ethics, corporate social responsibility, environmental practices and financial performances. Recognitions are awarded based on interviews conducted with investors. The recognition award is part of Corporate Governance Asia’s mission to enhance corporate governance practices throughout Asia.

The ‘Best Investor Relations Company for Malaysia’ award from Corporate Governance Asia is the third award won by AirAsia this year.

In January, the airline won the inaugural ‘Value Airline of the Year for 2012’ at Penton Media’s Air Transport World® (ATW), the leading monthly magazine covering the global airline industry. Following that, in February, AirAsia was crowned Asiamoney’s ‘Best Managed Company in Malaysia (Medium Cap) Award 2011’.

Statement from AirAsia, Tony Fernandes is not leaving AirAsia

This is an official statement from AirAsia

Tony Fernandes Not Leaving AirAsia

We refer to BERNAMA’s news report with the headline ‘Tony Fernandes May Leave AirAsia, No Timeline Set’, published on 8 December 2011 at 5.29pm (GMT +8). We wish to clarify that the report is inaccurate, and at this point of time already removed from the agency’s website.

Tan Sri Dr. Tony Fernandes’ statement was made only in reference to his aspiration and expectation of the quality of his successor, should he decides to retire in the future. However, our Group CEO does not have any plans to relinquish his leadership of the company any time ‘soon’ as suggested by the article.

The article also mentioned a statement made by Fernandes saying “…the three of us have plenty of things to do.” This is clear indication that Fernandes, along with AirAsia Chairman Dato’ Aziz Bakar and Deputy Group CEO Dato’ Kamarudin Meranun, will continue to pursue more opportunities with the airline and endow the company with their leadership for many years to come.

MY SAY > Well how come Mr Fernandes is leaving the biggest and most successful airlines in the world? Apart from AirAsia, Fernandes also owns Queens Park Rangers football club in the English Premier League and Team Lotus Formula 1.
