Washington, USA -- From the start, some passengers knew something was amiss. The flight attendant had asked them if the plane was in Houston.

It was in Dallas.

Then came dueling announcements from two flight attendants, the first saying the plane had mechanical problems; the second assuring passengers everything was OK.

Then, alarmingly, the increasingly excited flight attendant repeatedly declared over the public address system that she was no longer responsible for the safety of the plane, and that it was going to crash.

The whole time, the plane continued rolling toward the runway.

The Friday morning incident ended only after fellow crew members scuffled with their colleague, and when passengers helped restrain her, according to passengers interviewed by CNN.

Authorities said the flight was delayed, and that two flight attendants -- including the agitated attendant -- were taken to a Dallas hospital for treatment.

Local and federal officials said they do not anticipate criminal charges, adding to speculation that she may have suffered a mental breakdown. One passenger said the flight attendant described herself as bi-polar, and said she had not taken her medication.

The unusual incident put public focus on the nation's flight attendants, who more often are viewed as the people tasked with mediating disputes or dealing with others' aberrant behavior.

But on Friday morning, the flight attendant in the forward cabin of American Airlines Flight 2332 -- a Dallas to Chicago flight -- became the focus of attention.

"She was acting weird from the very beginning," said Whitney Bessler, a Dallas resident seated in the second row. "When we first got on the plane she was asking the passenger next to me if we were in Houston and where we were going. We kind of thought she was just making a joke."

But "before we were even taxiing she was talking about how we needed to do more cross-checks, or we needed more testing, or go back for more security, something like that," Bessler said.

Bessler and other passengers said the flight attendant got on the public address system, and appeared to be calling the pilots.

At first, "everybody was laughing because it sounded like she (had) accidentally turned on" the intercom, said Laurie Grabe of Traverse City, Michigan, who witnessed the incident from her ninth-row seat.

Then other flight attendants intervened, "telling her to turn off the PA, not to talk like that," Grabe said.

The flight attendant continued her disjointed announcements, passengers said. She said, "OK, if you (pilots) don't hear me, then I give up. I'm not responsible if this plane crashes," Grabe said. She also "said something about opening the doors."

"Everybody was starting to look at each other, like 'Oh, my God, What's going on here?' "Grabe said.

Said Bessler, "Two or three times over the PA, she talks about how the planes is going to crash, how she doesn't want the plane to crash on her watch." While some of her sentences were clear, others were just "random gibberish," Bessler said.

When the flight attendant said the plane was likely to crash, "the passenger behind me ... said, 'I'm calling 9-1-1,' " said passenger Bethany Chistakos, who was sitting in the middle of the plane. "Because ... the plane wasn't stopping. We were already on the runway, we were about literally (to) take off."

Passengers said other flight attendants and an off-duty pilot scuffled with the flight attendant over control of the microphone, and several passengers jumped in to subdue the woman. It took about five people to restrain her, they said.

They "threw her into the first row of seats and held her down," Grabe said.

Grabe said the flight attendant started "screaming bloody murder," sounding "demonic."

The attendant was taken to the hospital for evaluation, officials said. A second flight attendant who may have been injured while restraining the first one also was taken to the hospital.

An airline spokesman acknowledged the incident but said passengers were not in danger.

"We continue to investigate the details and circumstances," American Airlines spokesman Ed Martelle said.

"We will ensure that the affected flight attendants receive proper care, and we commend our other crew members for their assistance in quickly getting the aircraft back to the gate so that customers could be reaccommodated," he said.

"Our customers were not in danger at any time."

FBI spokeswoman Lydia Maese said no federal charges were filed and the agency sees no need for further investigation.

After the crew was replaced, the flight departed for Chicago at 9:46 a.m. local time, about an hour behind schedule.

MASwings, anak syarikat Penerbangan Malaysia, MAS mencatat peningkatan 13.56 peratus bilangan penumpang dalam tempoh 9 bulan pertama tahun ini, 2011 berbanding tempoh sama tahun lalu pada 2010.

Pada masa sama, pengendalian kargo MASwings turut mencatat pertumbuhan 44.42 peratus.

Dalam satu kenyataan dikeluarkan kementerian Pengangkutan, MASwings mengendalikan 2 juta 279 ribu 849 penumpang sejak Januari hingga September 2011.

Berbanding 2 juta 7 ribu 546 penumpang tempoh sama tahun lalu.

Pengendalian penumpang tertinggi adalah di lapangan terbang antarabangsa Kota Kinabalu sebanyak 498 ribu 821 orang.

Bagi pengendalian kargo, MASwings mengendalikan 3 juta 517 ribu 280 kilogram kargo.

Berbanding 2 juta 435 ribu 443 kilogram kargo dalam 9 bulan pertama tahun lalu, 2010.

Kargo terbanyak disumbang lapangan terbang Miri di Sarawak.

Peningkatan bilangan penumpang dan kargo MASwings, disumbang tambahan frekuensi penerbangan.

MASwings beroperasi di 7 Lapangan Terbang dan 9 padang terbang di Sabah dan Sarawak.

Ia termasuk Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Lahad Datu, Tawau, Sandakan, Bario, Ba'Kelalan dan Lawas.

MASwings ATR72-500 made a turnback to Kota Kinabalu, immediately after departing for Sibu, 27 October 2011



A MASwings ATR72-500 aircraft operating flight MH3183 that departed Kota Kinabalu for Sibu, made a turn back on the morning of Thursday, 27th October 2011 for rectification of a glitch in its landing gear mechanism.

After take-off, the operating crew noticed the left side gear lights remained illuminated and this prompted their decision to turn back in the interest of the safety of the passengers.

The aircraft did three fly passes in front of Kota Kinabalu Air Traffic Control to confirm the glitch in the left gear. After the third fly pass, it was confirmed that the left gear was in its normal position and the aircraft had an uneventful normal landing at 0909 hours.

There were a total of 23 passengers with 4 operating crew on board and all disembarked without any untoward incident.

They later boarded another standby MASwings ATR72-500 aircraft and departed for Sibu at 1015 hours.

MASwings apologises to the passengers of MH3183 for the disruption to their travel plans.

Setiap kali naik kapal terbang, pasti ada demonstrasi keselamatan oleh Pramugari/Pramugara yg berbunyi "Jika corong oksigen ini keluar secara automatik dari unit di atas anda, tarik corong oksigen dengan serta merta, serkupkan corong pada hidung dan mulut, DAN BERNAFASLAH SEPERTI BIASA" atau kalau demonstrasi dalam bahasa Inggeris dia menyebut "AND BREATHE NORMALLY"...

Hakikat sebenarnya kalau corong oksigen terkeluar dari unit di atas anda ketika kapal terbang sedang terbang, ini bermakna ada sesuatu yg tak kena pada pesawat itu pada ketinggian 30 ribu kaki atau 20 ribu kaki!!! Jika ini berlaku, pasti kita berasa cemas dan tidak boleh BERNAFAS SEPERTI BIASA, Kerana kita akan bernafas secara cemas / tercungap cungap!!!!!



Namun jika pesawat sudah mendarat dengan selamat, maka kita bolehlah bernafas dan tidur seperti biasa :

Malaysia's AirAsia X buys 3 more Airbus planes

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 FEBRUARY 2011 :

AirAsia X, the long haul, low fare affiliate of Malaysian based AirAsia Group has signed a firm contract for 3 new A330-200s with an option for 2 more, which brings the airline’s total order to 28 A330’s.

Scheduled for delivery from 2014, the aircraft will be operated on the carrier's expanding network, offering low fare service to destinations in Europe, Asia and the Pacific.

AirAsia X has ordered the 238 tonne increased take-off weight version of the A330-200, which is capable of flying non-stop from Kuala Lumpur to Europe.

The airline will configure the aircraft in a two class layout with 24 Premium flatbeds and 264 Economy seats.

The agreement was signed by Dato’ Kamarudin Meranun, the Chairman of AirAsia X and Dr. Kiran Rao, Airbus Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing.

It was witnessed by The Honourable Datuk Seri Dr, Chua Soi Lek, Dato' Sri Dr. Tony Fernandes, Founder of AirAsia X and Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X.

The signing ceremony took place on Monday, 28th February 2011 at the Westin Kuala Lumpur with the attendance of AirAsia X’s business partners and members of the media.

Azran Osman-Rani, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X said :

“This order reflects our positive outlook for the long haul low cost market out of Asia and the investment valued at RM1.5 billion would contribute significantly to the Prime Minister’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) targets, specifically in realising the Prime Minister’s strategy of prioritising direct flights to strategic and important markets. This would ensure Malaysia achieves its tourism targets in 2020.”

“With its low fuel burn, spacious cabin and extended range, the A330-200 will further improve our fuel efficiency and carbon emissions and strengthen our position as having the world’s lowest unit cost, enabling more people to fly further at lower cost than ever before," concluded Azran.

"This latest order from AirAsia X underscores the position of the A330 as the most efficient aircraft in its class flying today," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus. "The A330's low operating costs, range capability and proven reliability make it the clear winner for airlines flying in the growing long haul budget market."


AirAsia is the largest low cost airline group in the Asia-Pacific region and operates an all-Airbus fleet. Altogether, the group has now ordered over 200 aircraft from Airbus, including 175 single aisle A320s, 28 A330s and 10 A350 XWBs.


The twin engine A330 is one of the most widely used wide body aircraft in service today. To date, Airbus has won more than 1,100 orders for the various versions of the aircraft and over 700 are currently flying with almost 90 operators worldwide.

Air Asia X to launch first flight to Christchurch, New Zealand on 1st April 2011

Well this is not April's Fool.

But on 1st April, 2011 Malaysia's long haul, low fare AirAsia X will launch its first flight into Christchurch, New Zealand, with non-stop services, four times a week from Kuala Lumpur.

Christchurch is the tourism gateway to New Zealand’s South Island and beyond including Antartica, for travelers from Kuala Lumpur and provides them with an option to travel on the famous Kangaroo route between Europe, Malaysia and New Zealand/Australia.

And to get a taste of Antartica, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X, Azran Osman-Rani himself recently came back from an amazing venture in the South Pole which is the coldest place in the world!!!

In Antartica, he had the opportunity to visit the American and New Zealand research bases at McMurdo and Scott Base to experience the unique climate and geology of the coldest, driest and windiest continent and learn about the fascinating research projects being undertaken there.

Azran flew to Antarctica on a five-hour flight from the United States Antarctic Program Passenger Terminal in Christchurch, New Zealand and landed at the Pegasus Runway, an airstrip on an ice shelf at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica; where he stayed for two days at the Scott Base facility together with the scientists and field support services teams.

Antarctica New Zealand has also hosted Malaysian scientists conducting research on the Ice.

“We are willing to go to the ends of Earth in search of adventure-that is our X-Factor at AirAsia X,” said Azran Osman-Rani.

“This trip captures the essence of our pioneering X-ploratory spirit of pushing boundaries and breaking conventions. There is no place that is too cold or too remote to stop us from championing low fares and exciting travels and adventures. We are optimistic about our first flight into Christchurch, New Zealand in April as Christchurch is not only a beautiful place to travel but close to many adventurous destinations such as the fiords, glaciers and mountains of the South Island where there are many thrilling activities to experience. We are pleased with our encouraging 80% passenger loads since we announced open for sale in December 2010, and believe the demand will indeed increase once we start operations,” he added.


Besides touring the research base and facilities, including the Meridian Energy Wind Turbine farm, Azran, who is an outdoor adrenaline-junkie, grabbed at the opportunity to go along several hikes across the terrain, climbed several hills including the famed Castle Rock and Observatory Hill, as well as taking part in cross-country Nordic skiing across the ice-in below freezing temperatures that ranged from -10 to -35 degrees Celsius in the Southern Summer. His adventure in Antarctica also gave him the opportunity to come close to see the native Antarctic residents-Emperor penguins and Weddel seals, although he was careful to stay at least 5 metres away from the wildlife, as required under the Antarctic conservation rules.

Dancing sexy flight attendants on board Cebu Pacific airlines become internet sensations!!

Cebu Pacific Airlines (CEB), is a popular low-cost carrier that promises to give "low fare, great value" to every passenger who wants to fly.

The airlines is looking for new flight attendants, and among the requirements are - you have to dance on board the aircrafts but dancing skills are not required..!!

CEB recently shot to YouTube fame after a passenger posted a video of their flight attendants dancing to a mashup of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" and Katy Perry's "California Girls."

The dance, which was professionally choreographed, was actually a supplement to the usual safety demonstration conducted before takeoff.

"Cebu Pacific has always been known as a fun airline. We were looking for something new and different, to show that flight safety doesn't have to be boring," Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog told GMANews.TV in an earlier report.

CEB is hiring flight attendants to augment their workforce, as they are expecting four brand new airbus deliveries monthly starting October.

“We are scheduled to add more flights to Kota Kinabalu, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Seoul in time with our Airbus A320 aircraft deliveries, and we need more cabin crew to handle our additional capacity," said Iyog.

However, non-dancers need not worry because the safety demo hit was just "something they thought of doing."

"We had no idea it would become this big," said Iyog, who clarified that the new hires would not necessarily be dancing.

"First of all, not everybody can dance. I don't think we can require those who have two left feet to perform," she said.

Meanwhile, the Flight Attendants and Stewards Association of the Philippines (FASAP) has scored the dancing flight attendants as sexist.

“While it may look like a harmless publicity stunt to attract passengers at first glance, in the long run the stereotyping of flight attendants as entertainers will surely have a negative and sexist impact in the minds of the public, at the expense of the unwitting female-dancer-flight attendants," said FASAP.

While selected flights will still feature the safety demo dance, what CEB looks for in its applicants is the right attitude.

"They have to embody our culture of fun as an airline," Iyog told GMANews.TV.

Yesterday, CEB hired 300 flight attendants in a one-day walk-in recruitment at the Crowne Plaza.

More than a thousand applicants went through the initial interview but only 300 were given their pre-employment documents at the end of the application process.

Yesterday's walk-in recruitment was the fifth in the last two months.

Successful applicants will go through a 58-day training period, so those who were hired yesterday will be flying in December or January. "We hire for attitude and we train for skill," said Iyog.

The walk-in recruitment is a lot more convenient than the regular screening process, which requires applicants to go back and forth.

At the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila Hotel in Quezon City yesterday, all the concerned departments were present, from the People Department (HR) to the In-Flight Services Team.

"It's easier because they know where it is, the location is better and the venue is much bigger than our office," Iyog told GMANews.TV, explaining that they still receive applicants through the normal weekly recruitment because their hiring for cabin crew is continuous.

The qualifications for being a CEB flight attendant include:

a dynamic personality that embodies CEB’s culture of fun;

height of at least 5’3" for females and at least 5’7" for males;

weight that is proportional to height;

clear complexion, good eyesight, and good set of teeth;

college education;

proficiency in Filipino and English, and

willingness to be assigned outside Metro Manila.

Applicants are advised to bring along their updated resumé and recent 2x2 photo. The screening is on first-come first-serve basis.

Iyog added, “We have already successfully trained 120 flight attendants this year, and our 70th batch will soon graduate by the end of September. After rigorous training on safety and service, and competency checks, Batch 70 with 19 females and 9 males will be welcomed into the CEB family."

CEB currently has a fleet of 10 A319, 11 A320 jets and eight turbo-prop ATR 72 aircraft. It expects to take delivery of a total of 24 brand-new Airbus A320 until 2014.

AirAsia X denies flying too low when approaching Gold Coast, Australia



Malaysia's low cost carrier, AirAsia X has denied that its aircraft was flying too low while approaching Gold Coast airport in two incidents last week as the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigates the airline for two safety breaches on May 3 and 4.

“For the first incident, we do not think it is serious as we have checked all our flight data. We will supply the data to the ATSB so that they can analyse and compare with air traffic control data to see if there are any anomalies.

“They want to routinely check but we believe there is no issue. Whatever it may be, the safety of passengers will not be compromised,'' AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani said.

As for the second incident, Azran said “we do not think anyone was in danger. There was low visibility and the aircraft had to be diverted to Brisbane when it was approaching Gold Coast,'' he said.

The only inconvenience was on the part of the passengers that had to land in Brisbane instead of Gold Coast but that was “the safest thing to do because of the weather conditions.''

The ATSB had posted details of the two incidents on its website which details out the incident on May 4 whereby the AirAsia X A330-300, registration 9M-XXB aircraft went “below the radar lowest safe altitude” while approaching the airport after a flight from Kuala Lumpur and ATSB classified the incident as serious.

Flight Global reported that the approach was made in instrument meteorological conditions, indicating low visibility due to cloudy or bad weather conditions at that time.

The bureau said a similar incident involving the same aircraft occurred on May 3 in visual meteorological conditions, which indicates sufficient visibility. An investigation into the incidents is ongoing, said the ATSB, adding that no injuries occurred as a result.

“To say we are putting passengers at risk and flying below the radar is completely incorrect. The landing was smooth and we are transparent and that is why we are sharing all the flight data. We will fully cooperate with the ATSB,'' Azran said.

Air France and Airbus - the French connection

Could it be a tiny piece of metal caused the crash of a 120 tonne modern aircraft – the Air France Airbus A330 Flight 447..?

Based on media reports, a possible flaw in the tiny piece of metal called the Pitot tubes, used to measure the speed of aircraft, is being investigated in the case of Air France Flight 447 which disappeared in the Atlantic ocean with 228 people on board, while on a flight from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to Paris, France on 1st June 2009.



The L-shaped metal Pitot tubes jut from the wing or fuselage of a plane, and are heated to prevent icing. The pressure of air entering the tubes lets sensors measure the speed and angle of flight. An iced-over, blocked or malfunctioning Pitot tube could cause an airspeed sensor to fail, and lead the computer controlling the plane to accelerate or decelerate in a potentially dangerous fashion.

Air France said it began replacing the Pitot tubes on the Airbus A330 model on April 27 after an improved version became available, and will finish the work in the "coming weeks." The monitors had not yet been replaced on the plane that crashed.

So who is at fault here?

Airbus aircrafts are being manufactured in the huge Airbus complex in Toulouse, France.

The aircraft that crashed belongs to Air France.

So there is a French connection here.

Why Airbus and Air France, both from France, cannot sort out the flaws in the Pitot tubes?

Who is at fault and responsible for the crash???

In normal circumstances, aircrafts as huge as Airbus A330 can pass through stormy conditions as well as endure lightnings.

So what exactly happened to the flight on 1st June 2009 at approximately 11.14 pm?

God bless the souls of the 228 passengers of Air France Flight 447. A baby is among the passengers of that flight.

Accidents involving Airbus A 330 aircrafts, happened before.

Notable accidents and incidents involving the Airbus A330 aircrafts :

• On 30 June 1994, an A330 owned by Airbus on a test flight simulating an engine failure on takeoff crashed shortly after take-off from Toulouse, killing all seven on board.

• On 15 March 2000, a 6-year-old Malaysia Airlines A330-300 aircraft was severely damaged by corrosive liquids that were being transported in the cargo hold on a passenger flight from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur. The corrosive liquid oxalyl chloride was mistakenly declared as non-toxic solid hydroxyquinoline. 18 canisters of the substance were transported via Kuala Lumpur intended to transit to Chennai. Five airport workers fell ill as they were unloading baggage from the aircraft at Kuala Lumpur after some of the canisters had leaked and chemicals spilled into the aircraft's cargo hold, resulting in extensive corrosion damage to the fuselage, wing box structure and landing gear. The aircraft was subsequently declared written-off.
On 12 June 2007, a court in Beijing ordered China National Chemical Construction Corp, the owner of the cargo, to pay US$65 million to Malaysia Airlines for the loss.

• On 24 July 2001, two Sri Lankan Airlines A330-243s were destroyed on ground by an LTTE attack at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, Sri Lanka, along with an Airbus A320-200, an Airbus A340-300 and a squadron of military aircraft. Another two planes, an A320 and an A340 were also damaged but have since been repaired

• On 24 August 2001, Air Transat, Flight 236, an A330-243, performed the world's longest recorded glide with a jet airliner after suffering fuel exhaustion over the Atlantic Ocean. The plane flew powerless for 19 minutes and covered 65 nautical miles (120 km) to an emergency landing in the Azores (Portugal). No one was injured, but the aircraft suffered some structural damage and blown tires.

• On 18 July 2003, B-HYA, a Dragonair A330-342 encountered severe turbulence associated with Tropical Depression Koni over the South China Sea, during the flight KA060 from Kota Kinabalu to Hong Kong. 12 crew members and 3 passengers were injured, of which 2 crew members sustained serious injuries, but there were no fatalities. The aircraft landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport.

. On 7 October 2008, VH-QPA, an A330-303 operating Qantas Flight 72, suffered a rapid loss of altitude in two sudden uncommanded pitch down manoeuvres, causing serious injuries while 80 nautical miles (150 km) from Learmonth, Australia. After declaring an emergency, the aircraft landed safely at Learmonth.

• On 1 June 2009, Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330-203 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people onboard, was reported lost over the Atlantic Ocean.The aircraft crashed in the Atlantic Ocean 400-500 miles northeast of the islands of Fernando de Noronha. All passengers and crew were killed. The cause remains under investigation.

RECIFE, Brazil – Search crews recovered the vertical stabilizer from the tail section of an Air France airliner that went down in the Atlantic, Brazil's air force said Monday — a key find that could help locate the black boxes and determine why the jet crashed.

Eight more bodies also were found, bringing the total recovered to 24 since Air France Flight 447 disappeared with 228 people on board, according to Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz.

The discoveries of debris and the bodies are all helping searchers narrow their hunt for the jet's black boxes, perhaps investigators' best hope of learning what happened to the flight. The data and voice recorders are located in the fuselage near the tail section of the jet.

William Waldock, who teaches air crash investigation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona, said that does not mean the black boxes will necessarily be located near where the debris was recovered, "but finding the tail narrows down the area even further."

Brazilian military officials have refused to detail the large pieces of the plane they have found. But a video on the Brazilian air force Web site entitled "Vertical Stabilizer Found" shows video of the piece — which keeps the plane's nose from swinging from side to side — being located and tethered to a ship.

The part had Air France's blue-and-red stripes, was still in its original triangular shape and was not visibly burned.

Waldock — who examined the photos and video of the stabilizer and rudder — said the damage he saw looks like a lateral fracture.

"That would reinforce the idea that the plane broke up in flight," he said. "If it hits intact, everything shatters in tiny pieces."

No signs of burn marks on the stabilizer offered scant clues: Any explosion or fire in the fuselage would likely not make its way back to the tail section, according to Waldock. Examining the fracture surfaces will also be key, Waldock said, since it will indicate from what direction the force came that snapped the piece.

Investigators are also looking at the possibility that external speed monitors — called Pitot tubes — iced over and gave dangerously false readings to cockpit computers in a thunderstorm.

Peter Goelz, a former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board, said the faulty airspeed readings and the fact the vertical stabilizer was sheared from the jet could be related.

The Airbus A330-200 has a "rudder limiter" which constricts how much the rudder — which is attached to the vertical stabilizer — can move at high speeds. If it were to move too far while traveling fast, it could shear off and take the vertical stabilizer with it.

"If you had a wrong speed being fed to the computer by the Pitot tube, it might allow the rudder to over travel," Goelz said. "The limiter limits the travel of the rudder at high speeds and prevents it from being torn off."

Asked if the rudder or stabilizer being sheared off could have brought the jet down, Goelz said: "Absolutely. You need a rudder. And you need the (rudder) limiter on there to make sure the rudder doesn't get torn off or cause havoc with the plane's aerodynamics."

Goelz also said the bodies recovered will play a role in the investigation. If investigators can determine the identity of a body and know where that person was sitting in the plane, the types of injuries sustained could offer clues into the crash.

The investigation into TWA Flight 800 that crashed off the coast of Long Island, New York, in 1996, found that victims sitting in front of row 30 sustained flash burns. Goelz said that helped investigators confirm that the nose broke off and fire blew back from the fuel tank onto those passengers.

The wreckage and the bodies were found roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast, and about 45 miles (70 kilometers) from where the jet was last heard from on May 31.

Some high-tech help is on the way for investigators — two U.S. Navy devices capable of picking up the flight recorders' emergency beacons far below on the ocean floor. What caused the Airbus A330-200 to plunge into the middle of the ocean on May 31 with 228 people on board might not be known until those black boxes are found.

An internal memo sent to Air France pilots Monday and obtained by The Associated Press urges them to refuse to fly unless at least two of the three Pitot sensors on each planes have been replaced.

The leader of another pilots' union, however, said Monday that Pitot troubles probably didn't cause the Flight 447 disaster.

Searchers must move quickly to find answers in the cockpit voice and data recorders, because acoustic pingers on the boxes begin to fade 30 days after crashes.

While large pieces of plane debris has helped narrow the search, it remains a daunting task in waters up to 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) deep and an ocean floor marked by rugged mountains.

Ocean currents over the eight days since the disaster have pushed floating wreckage far and wide, complicating the search, said U.S. Air Force Col. Willie Berges, chief of the U.S. military liaison office in Brazil and commander of the American military forces supporting the search operation.

"In the sense that as the debris drifts away, you're not sure exactly where the black boxes or other parts of the aircraft are on the bottom of the ocean."

The two towed pinger locators the U.S. is sending are expected to arrive in Brazil late Monday and will be dropped into the ocean near the debris field by Thursday, Berges said.

The search is focusing on several hundred square miles (square kilometers) roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

The listening devices themselves are five-feet long and weigh 70 pounds. One will be towed by a Brazilian ship, the other by a French vessel, slowly trawling in a grid pattern across the search area. The devices can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters).

Cables attached to the devices lead to on-board computers, enabling a 10-person team that accompanies each device to listen for pings and to visually see them on a screen, like a radar spotting objects in air.

The French nuclear attack submarine Emeraude, arriving later this week, also will try to find the acoustic pings, military spokesman Christophe Prazuck said.

If the pings are located, French deep-water unmanned subs aboard the oceanographic survey ship Pourquoi Pas will attempt to retrieve the boxes from the ocean floor.

Searchers have spotted two airplane seats and debris with Air France's logo, and recovered dozens of structural components from the plane. They had already recovered jet wing fragments, and said hundreds of personal items believed to from passengers were plucked from the water.

France is leading the investigation into the cause, while Brazil focuses on the recovery of bodies and wreckage.

Brazil says the search area lies southeast of the jet's last transmission — automatic messages signaling catastrophic electrical failure and loss of cabin pressure. The messages mean Flight 447 likely broke apart in turbulent weather while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

The location of the wreckage could mean the pilot was trying to turn around in mid-flight.

The L-shaped metal Pitot tubes jut from the wing or fuselage of a plane, and are heated to prevent icing. The pressure of air entering the tubes lets sensors measure the speed and angle of flight. An iced-over, blocked or malfunctioning Pitot tube could cause an airspeed sensor to fail, and lead the computer controlling the plane to accelerate or decelerate in a potentially dangerous fashion.

Air France said it began replacing the Pitot tubes on the Airbus A330 model on April 27 after an improved version became available, and will finish the work in the "coming weeks." The monitors had not yet been replaced on the plane that crashed.

An official with the Alter union, speaking on condition of anonymity because the memo was not publicly released, said there is a "strong presumption" among their pilot members that a Pitot problem precipitated the crash.

The memo says the airline should have grounded all A330 and A340 jets pending the replacement, and warns of a "real risk of loss of control" due to Pitot problems.


France's defense minister and the Pentagon have said there were no signs that terrorism was involved in the crash.

How to breathe normally if something is wrong with the aircraft??

Safety briefing is compulsory before take off in any commericial flight.

The safety briefing will always start like - this is your seatbelt, to fasten it..... bla bla bla

Then there is a part where the cabin crews will demonstrate to you on how to properly wear the oxygen mask in case the mask came out suddenly and automatically from the compartment above you.

What puzzle me most is that the safety briefing will always use the phrase - Put on the mask and Breathe NORMALLY...

My question is HOW TO BREATHE NORMALLY if the oxygen masks suddenly pop out during flight, because it means something is wrong with the flight.

And how can you breathe NORMALLY if something is wrong with the flight, 37,000 feet above ground????

You will be breathless isn't it???





And some airports in the world need total overhaul too!!!! like this Jumbo Jet landing too close to the beach goers at St Marten Airport!!!
